How to set sleep time on windows 8. How to disable the hibernation function of a computer or laptop

What is the difference between sleep and hibernation modes?

  • Sleep mode in Windows 8, this is a low-power state of the computer, in which some of the hardware (hard disk, matrix) is turned off, and the rest is suspended. Open documents and other data will be saved in RAM. In this mode, the system can be returned to working condition as quickly as possible.
  • Hibernation- this is the saving of the current session to a special file on the hard disk - hiberfil.sys with the subsequent shutdown of the PC. When you exit hibernation, the hiberfil.sys data is reloaded into RAM, and you can continue working from the point where you left off. This mode is intended for laptops as it conserves battery power.
  • Hybrid sleep mode combines both of the previous ones. The session in this mode is saved both in memory and on the hard drive. If during the idle time the PC power is not turned off, the session is restored from memory, if it happens - from the hard disk. Hybrid sleep mode is designed for desktop computers. If it is enabled, hibernation becomes unavailable and disappears from the list of ways to turn off the PC, as in this example:

How to "wake up" the computer?

In most cases, to wake up your PC from sleep or hibernation, you need to press the Power button on the chassis once. But on some models, you need to do something else to do this - press a key on the keyboard or open the laptop lid.

How to disable hibernation on Windows 8?

You can turn off sleep mode in Windows 8 through the Computer Settings metro application or Control Panel.

The first method (through the control panel)

Press Windows + I on the keyboard (to open the list of options in the Charms bar) and select "Control Panel".

Or open the context menu of the "Windows" button and click the appropriate item.

In Control Panel, open the Hardware and Sound category.

And then - the section "Power supply".

Click the Sleep Setting side menu.

Expand the "Put this PC to sleep" drop-down list and select "Never". Click the "Save Changes" button.

You can turn off sleep mode on your laptop even faster. To get into the settings, click on the battery charging icon in the system tray,

click "Advanced Power Options"

and select "Never" from the same list. Here, as you can see, you can turn off the hibernation mode both when powered from one source (mains or battery), or from both.

Second way

The previous method is suitable for different versions of Windows ("seven", whist, "eight"), but this one is only for Windows 8, since there are no metro applications in predecessor systems.

To disable going to sleep, do the following:

  • Press the Windows + I combination and click at the bottom of the "Change computer settings" panel.

  • Click on the Computer and Devices menu.

  • Open the "Shutdown and sleep" section and expand the "Sleep" drop-down list.

Select "Never" from the list. The setting will take effect without confirmation.

The same steps will help disable the transition to hibernation, if it is active.

What if my Windows 8 PC won't go into sleep mode or wake up spontaneously?

We prohibit devices to "wake up" the computer

Various devices, especially those connected via USB (mice, flash drives, etc.), can wake up the computer from sleep. To prevent them from doing this without your knowledge, do the following:

1. Install the latest drivers on the motherboard chipset and the devices themselves (if they work with separate drivers).

2. Open the "Device Manager" in one of the following ways:

  • Expand the context menu of the Windows button and click on the corresponding item.

  • Press the Windows key + F key combination (to start the search function) and enter "device manager" in the search box. Open the found file.

3. Select "Properties" from the context menu of the connected device (in our example, this is a mouse).

In this article, we will analyze the possible reasons due to which in Windows does not work / sleep mode is interrupted(Sleep Mode). The article applies to both Windows 8 / 8.1 and Windows 7.

The problem with sleep mode can manifest itself in different ways, for example, the system itself may wake up a few seconds after entering sleep mode, at an arbitrary (seemingly) moment in time, or refuse to fall asleep altogether.

The most common reason for waking up from sleep mode is network card drivers (both LAN and Wi-Fi), USB devices and a number of background processes (most often this is a class of software for organizing a network media server on a PC, including). Also note that for many users, the system stops hibernating immediately after upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1.

Power plan settings

First of all, you should check the settings of the used power supply scheme. To do this, in the Control Panel, open the item Power Options(Power supply). Find the power scheme that is currently selected as the main one (in our example, this is the scheme Balanced) and press the button Change Plan Settings.

Under Basic Power Plan Settings, click Change advanced power settings.

In the window with detailed parameters of the power supply scheme, find and expand the section Sleep... Check that the parameter Allow wake timers(Allow wake-up timers) is disabled (Disable). If it is not, disable it, otherwise Windows itself may wake up after certain system events.

In the event that the sleep mode button on the laptop does not work correctly (when you press the power button once), make sure that in section P ower buttons and lid -> Sleep button action both parameters are set to Sleep.

Save your changes and try hibernating again. If the problem persists, we will continue diagnostics.

Advice... You can put the system into sleep mode from the command line. In the event that hibernation is disabled on the computer, the command will be as follows.

If hibernation is enabled, you must first disable

Powercfg -h off

And only then execute:

Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll, SetSuspendState 0,1,0

Otherwise, the system will go into hibernation instead of sleeping.

Advice... We also recommend that you reset your current power plan to default. This can be done by clicking the button Restore default settings for this plan in the parameters of the current power plan. After saving the changes, you need to restart your computer.

Identifying devices and applications preventing hibernation

You can use the utility to determine which applications or drivers prevent Windows from going to sleep. powercfg... To generate a report, and run the command:

Powercfg.exe -requests

The results of the command will indicate the processes, applications and drivers that prevent the system from entering hibernation mode.

In our case, 2 reasons for the impossibility of switching to sleep mode were found:

  • Exe process (media server)
  • Driver High Definion Audio Device

The reason for the last exit from hibernation can be done using the command:

Powercfg.exe -lastwake

In this example, you can see that the last time the computer woke up the network card driver from sleep mode.

To disable the ability to "wake up" by the computer for this device, we will find it in the device manager ( devmgmt.msc) and uncheck the box in the driver properties (Allow this device to wake up the computer).

Finding Wake Up Information in the System Log

You can also determine the reason for Windows waking up from hibernation using. To do this, open the system log (System) and filter it by the event source named P ower-Troubleshooter.

Let's open the description of the last event:

Time to enter sleep mode:… ..

Time to wake up from sleep mode:….

Output Source: Device - USB Root Hub

In this example, the reason for waking up the computer is a certain device connected via USB. Typically, this can be a USB mouse or keyboard.

Disable waking up from sleep mode for USB devices

If you find that the system is waking up due to a USB device, you can completely disable the wake-up option for all USB devices. To do this, open the device manager and in the properties of all root USB hubs, uncheck the box "Allow this device to wake up the computer from sleep mode".

In the event that you are using a USB-connected mouse, you must also uncheck the specified checkbox in its properties.

If all else fails

In the event that none of the previous methods helped to solve the problem, try:

Manage sleep and hibernation, change advanced power settings, and extend battery life on mobile devices. To change the sleep and hibernation settings of your PC under Windows 8.1, you can after clicking on the page " Changing schema parameters»Options« Change advanced power settings". ... The same option is available in other sections of the power options.

What is the difference between sleep and hibernation? When you put your computer to sleep, it saves all of the information in RAM before shutting down. As a result, when you turn on your computer again, it starts up very quickly, and exactly where you put it to sleep. After all, it is not necessary to read information into the computer's memory, it is already there.

Hibernation writes the contents of memory to a file on your hard drive. This means that when you turn off the computer, work will not be lost, but the startup will not be so fast.

Advice... Include the command " Hibernation"In Windows 8.1 you can in the menu" Power supply"By clicking on the option" Power button actions", On the left side of the window, and then" Change parameters that are currently not available". At the bottom of the screen, you will see the section “ Shutdown options”, And the hibernation function is available for modification. After enabling the command, it will become available in the shutdown menu and by hotkeys Win + X.

When viewing the sleep mode settings, you will see an option to change advanced power settings. Here you will see many more customization options (click the "Change settings that are currently unavailable" button).

Some of these options can be very helpful:

  • Hard Drive: Why You Might Need To Unplug Your Hard Drive? Hard drives consume a lot of power. Perhaps you have multiple hard drives on your computer and most of the time they are used only for file storage or for backups. Installing Windows 8.1 disabling unused hard drives reduces the overall power consumption of your computer. Any hard drive in use will still have power.

Remember, if you want to access a powered off mechanical hard drive, it will take some time as it should spin up.

Advice... If you do not want to use any timings in the advanced power settings, change the default time to 0 (zero).

  • Wireless adapter options: Wi-Fi and mobile broadband are a huge drain on your laptop, ultrabook, or tablet as they turn your computer into a radio transmitter and receiver. If you change the default settings for locations where you have a strong signal, you will still get a good signal, but the computer will use less electricity to power the Wi-Fi system.
  • Sleep Mode: You can turn Sleep and Hibernation on or off completely if they are causing problems on your computer.
  • USB Settings: If your computer is connected to computer-powered USB devices - perhaps an external hard drive or optical drive - you can enable an option to turn off its power if the device is not being used, of course. This option is able to significantly extend the life of a laptop, such as an ultrabook.
  • Screen: In the power options, you can choose the time the monitor turns off, and here you have options for precise control over the degree of dimming of the display when turned off and brightness when turned on. If your computer comes with a built-in exposure meter, you can turn on adaptive brightness control, which will automatically adjust brightness based on lighting conditions.
  • Battery: The battery options allow you to set what Windows 8.1 sees as low and critical battery levels. If you have a new battery and don't want annoying reminders, set the low battery level to 10%. However, if you are frequently away from a battery-powered computer, it might make sense to set it to auto-hibernate when the battery runs out.

Extending battery life on mobile devices.

If you're on the go with a laptop, ultrabook, or tablet and want to maximize their battery life, there are certain things that make sense.

  1. Decrease the brightness of the screen as much as possible. The less power it takes to display an image, the longer the battery lasts. Your screen is the main energy eater.
  2. Turning off the keyboard backlight (if you have one) will also save energy.
  3. Set the screen to turn off after two minutes of inactivity, and possibly set the device to sleep after 10 minutes.
  4. If not needed, turn off Wi-Fi, cellular (3G / 4G / LTE) or Bluetooth connections.

On a laptop or tablet, it might make sense to turn off the screen after a couple of minutes of inactivity. The screen of a mobile device is the most power-hungry component. Turning it off quickly enough prolongs battery life.

You can also disable unused features such as 3G and GPS, which consume energy to search for and receive radio signals. In addition, Windows 8.1 has a function that turns off the power of all connected USB devices, which also drains the computer's battery.

Sleep and hibernation problems in Windows 8.1 can manifest themselves in different ways, for example, the computer refuses to sleep or wakes up from hibernation for no apparent reason. There are also cases when, after installing the system, users find that the power buttons responsible for putting Windows into sleep mode are missing.

The reason for spontaneous exiting from hibernation mode may be incorrect power settings configured for auto-start of the program in Task Scheduler, USB devices connected to the computer, as well as network card drivers.

The best way to start troubleshooting a problem is to check your power settings. To do this, go to "Additional power options",

we find the item.

This should prevent a computer that is already in sleep mode from waking up spontaneously. Without closing the settings window, expand the item Sleep Button Action

and install "Dream" or, if necessary, "Hibernation"... In laptops, you should also check the item "Action when closing the lid".

If you have previously added applications to the Task Scheduler, for example, you should remove them as well.

If there is no transition point to sleep

If the computer shutdown button menu item Hibernation no, in the section "Power supply" click the link "Action of the power buttons",

then "Changing parameters that are currently unavailable" and check the box at the bottom of the window "Sleep mode".

Note: the presence or absence of these options may depend on the hardware configuration, system and availability of appropriate drivers. Also, in some Windows assemblies, the components responsible for hibernation may be disabled or cut by the assembler.

Putting to sleep on the command line

Alternatively, you can try to put the PC into sleep mode through the command line, after disabling hibernation mode with the command
powercfg -h off

On Windows, putting yourself to sleep is done with the command rundll32.exe powrprof.dll, SetSuspendState 0,1,0

If you execute it with hibernation enabled, then instead of falling asleep, the system will go into hibernation.

Determine devices and applications that interfere with the transition to sleep

To identify devices and programs that may prevent the PC from falling asleep, we will use the built-in utility powercfg.
Open the CMD console as administrator and run the following command:
powercfg.exe –requests

A report will be generated, which will list the drivers and processes that prevent the system from going to sleep. If you need to determine the reason for the last spontaneous wake from sleep mode, use the command powercfg.exe –lastwake... If a problematic driver is found, find it in, open its properties and in the tab "Power Management" disable the option that allows this device to wake the computer from hibernation.

find item Sleep → Allow wake-up timers and put them in the "Disable" position.

That's all. Thanks for reading the article. I hope you found it useful.
Attention!

And again, I greet you, dear readers of my blog. Glad to see you again on the pages of my blog. Today is a day off, which means you can get a good night's sleep. By the way, did you know that although a computer is a machine, it also wants to sleep. At least this is the default program. Of course, if you do not use it for some time, then it falls asleep, i.e. as if it turns off, but then you can wake him up and continue to work.

But I know firsthand how sometimes this computer sleep annoys people and people at work just cry (not literally, of course) and don't know how to remove sleep mode in windows 8 or 7, or even in XP. The algorithm is the same everywhere.

Of course, hibernation is sometimes a very necessary thing, because thanks to it, the computer practically does not consume resources and rests if you get lost somewhere. True, some users really do not like it when the computer goes into this mode and takes their "sleepy" friend out of there for a long time, while shouting at him.

By the way, in order not to poke buttons, it is very easy to wake up the computer from sleep mode. You need to press the power button 1 time. That's all)

Well then. Let me show you an easy way to turn off hibernation. You need to do the following:

Here is such a simple and effective way to get rid of the terrible sleep mode. In general, if you study windows thoroughly, you can simplify and optimize all work at the computer so much that it's just a fairy tale. That is why I recommend that you watch this wonderful course by windows. After watching it, you will not only ask how what to do, but you yourself will advise everyone on these issues.

By the way, if you perceive video better than text, then you can watch my video about sleep mode below.

And for today I'm finishing. Hope everyone did it. Although what am I talking about? Of course everyone did it. Well done. Don't forget to subscribe to my blog posts updates and you will find out a lot more interesting things. See you in the next tutorials! Bye Bye.
