What is the difference between sleep and hibernation modes?

  • Hybrid Sleep combines both of the previous ones. A session in this mode is saved both in memory and on the hard drive. If during the idle time the PC does not turn off the power - the session is restored from memory, if it happens - with hard drive. Hybrid sleep is designed for desktop computers. If it is enabled, hibernation becomes unavailable and disappears from the list of ways to turn off the PC, as in this example:

The first way (through the control panel)

    You can also disable hibernation using the console. Hibernation is a computer state very similar to Sleep mode, but in this case, the PC consumes much less power. This is due to the fact that during normal sleep, only the screen, cooling system and hard drive are turned off, while everything else continues to work with minimal resource consumption. During hibernation, everything is turned off, and the state of the system before shutdown is completely saved on the hard disk.

    Type in "Command line" the following command:

    powercfg.exe /hibernate off

Some of these options can be very useful:

  • Hard drive: Why might you need to unplug your hard drive? Hard drives consume a lot of energy.   • Display: In the power options, you can choose when to turn off the monitor, and here you can fine-tune the amount of display dimming when turned off and brightness when turned on. If your computer comes with a built-in light meter, you can turn on adaptive brightness control, which will automatically change brightness based on ambient light.
  • Battery: The battery options allow you to set what Windows 8.1 sees as low and critical battery levels. If you have a new battery and don't want annoying reminders, set the low battery level to 10%. However, if you often walk away from a battery-powered computer, it makes sense to set automatic hibernation when the battery is low.

Extend battery life on mobile devices.

If you're using a laptop, ultrabook, or tablet on the road and want to maximize their battery life, there are certain things that make sense.

  1. Reduce screen brightness as much as possible. The less power required to display an image, the longer the battery lasts. Your screen is a major energy eater.
  2. Turn off the keyboard backlight (if you have one), this will also save energy.
